The Donkey belongs to the Equidae family which includes horses and zebras. Equus is the donkey’s genus.

Quick facts:

Donkeys and horses are from the same family, but obviously, they are different physically. They are also different mentally and emotionally. Donkeys are well known for their endurance and patience on hard tasks. Horses can show some fear of novel situations, unlike donkeys who show limited fear response, which can sometimes be mistaken for stubbornness.

Donkeys have large ears; even larger than horses’ ears. These large ears help control the body’s temperature and stay cool in the hot desert. The donkey’s ears make them one of the species with good hearing ability, they can hear voices from far away.

Wild donkeys are native to north Africa and the middle east. Especially,  in deserts and savannas in northern Africa from Morocco to Somalia, in the Arabian Peninsula. In China, India, Nepal, and northern Pakistan, we can find another specie called the kiang or Tibetan wild ass.

The wild donkey can weigh up to 1,058 lbs (480 kilograms), and the smallest adult donkey can weigh 176 lbs (80 kilograms).

An average donkey’s size and length vary between 36 and 48 inches (92 and 123 cm) at the shoulders, and 43-57 inches (109-145 cm) at the withers. The body length has an overall 57-76 inches (145-193 cm).
